For Those Seeking Orthomolecular Psychiatric Care
The Center for the Improvement of Human Functioning International, Inc. is a not-for-profit medical, research, and educational organization. The Center uses an approach that was pioneered by its founder, Dr. Hugh Riordan. Dr. Riordan believed in caring for the whole person, identifying the underlying causes of a sustained illness, and then characterizing biochemical uniqueness as essential ingredients in the process of restoring healthy functioning.
Our Center doctors provide an in-depth evaluation to determine why symptoms (whether physical or emotional) exist. During the initial outpatient visit, a medical and social history, a physical examination, and a comprehensive panel of laboratory tests are performed to identify specific imbalances. Findings from these evaluations serve as the basis for creating an individualized treatment program to restore proper biochemical functioning. Treatment programs might include such biochemicals as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, and bio-identical hormones as well as dietary recommendations.
These nutritional therapies and dietary changes will take a period of time to shift the biochemistry of the body towards more optimal functioning. Patient cultivation of better lifestyle habits is an integral part of The Riordan Approach.
Biochemical therapy is not an alternative to traditional drug therapies; it complements other treatment methods. This therapy can be used in conjunction with prescription medications, which may be eventually reduced or phased out altogether as the biochemistry is balanced. Any changes in medication are made under the supervision of the patient's local physician.
