A PASSION FOR IMPROVING THE LIVES OF OTHERS
HUGH D. RIORDAN, M.D.

It was on January 13, 2004, almost a year prior to Dr. Riordan’s death, that a co-learner from The Center for the Improvement of Human Functioning International brought to his attention a very promising nutrition, obesity prevention and children’s wellness program taking place in Leavenworth, Kan. What captured Dr. Riordan’s curiosity were the extraordinary results experienced in only the first four months of the program. Shortley, in his usual “take charge” style, he drove to Leavenworth to visit Anthony School to experience Eat, Exercise, Excel first hand. Dr. Riordan returned to The Center with very high praise for Anthony School’s principal, Janine Kempker, and declared, “Every child in Kansas deserves this program. It is simple. It is inexpensive. It works!” Dr. Riordan was determined to spread the good word about the program and committed the resources of The Center toward the effort. He and The Center’s videographer, Dean Dodson, returned to Anthony School and created a 30-minute film that tells the success story of Eat, Exercise, Excel. Since the video’s completion in July 2004, The Center has helped to promote the program by including it on the brightspot.org Web site. The Center also made sure needed funding was secured to keep the program operating during the 2004-05 school year. One of Dr. Riordan’s last dreams was to share this program with children throughout the state.
