I have been thinking of Dr. Riordan today, and just went on the website at this moment learned of his passing. Dr. Riordan was one my heros. He was a true medical maverick. He was a true trailblazer. He was a true fully alive human being. He was true pioneer in health. He was unique - one of kind. He was a loyal friend. He was a man of great inspiration. Because of Dr.Riordan and the many people who walked through the doors of the Olive W. Garvey Center for the Improvement of Human Functioning, I know in health of the human being in a much fuller way than I would have ever known it without him and the center. I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Riordan in offering undergraduate credit course work in the Physiology and Psychology of Personal Health Control and Physiology and Psychology of Fatigue at Friends University. I would love to be present at his memorial service.

Dr. Riordan was a mentor, supporter, colleague, friend and father figure for me.I will miss him dearly. His novel ideas, theories and dedication to patients will also be missed. I had the honor to publish various scientific papers with him and to discuss ideas, theories and information for long hours that I hope will change how degenerative disease are treated.Thank you, Dr. Hugh for all this. We will keep working hard as you teached us by your example, this will be our way of honoring you.

Hearing of Dr. Riordan's passing came as a shock to me, as I'm sure it did for so many other people. I always enjoyed his soft sense of humor, his generosity, his inquisitiveness, his openness to new ideas, and his steadfast commitment to the importance of nutrition in health. He had a way of seeing things so clearly: As one example, a couple of years ago, when I told Dr. Riordan that I was going to work on a book on nutrition and genes, he gently shrugged his shoulders and matter-of-factly said, "Genes don't do anything by themselves." Those words became a cornerstone for the book. Genes, like every other aspect of our health, depend on nutrition. I will miss my conversations with Dr. Riordan. I owe him a lot of gratitude...and more.

Hugh Riordan was a "bright spot" in the lives of countless breastfeeding mothers and their babies through his long association with La Leche League International. His openminded, creative approach to health challenges and his compassionate heart will be missed, personally, by all seven of the LLLI founders. Godspeed Hugh, and thanks, for leaving the world a better place!
Marian Tompson
My mother used to say that Hugh Riordan was the most brillant person she had ever met. I agree with that statement, and would add that he was as compassionate as any person I've known. I think in many ways he saved my life, and I will be eternally grateful to who he was and to what he accomplished in his astonishing life.

La Leche League International(LLLI) was saddened to hear about the death of long-time friend and breastfeeding advocate Dr. Hugh Riordan. It is with tremendous gratitude that LLLI remembers him. Dr. Riordan was a former member of the LLLI Board of Directors, was a member of the LLLI Health Advisory Council for over thirty years and a popular speaker at LLLI Conferences. He was instrumental in launching the capital campaign which made it possible for LLLI to purchase its headquarters in Schaumburg, Illinois. In 2001, he was recipient of the Founders'Award, given by the seven Founders of LLLI to an individual who has made continous, outstanding and exemplary contributions to breastfeeding in the world. Upon reception of the award at the LLLI Conference, Dr. Riordan graciously turned the tables and honored the Founders. He surprised them with a professional singing group that performed an original song honoring them.

I was deeply saddened to learn that Dr. Riordan had "abandoned his physical garment" before I had a chance to meet him in person or even communicate with him...I learned of the Brightspot and the work done there in July, 2004 through a friend who had returned from a workshop there...My entire life took on new direction, including a future plan to move to Wichita, a place I've never even visited, so that I may be a volunteer there, a place where people's idea of healthcare is in alignment with my own...The Brightspot has become my new "favorite charity"...Knowing of this place, started by Dr. Riordan, that I have not even visited, has impacted my life so deeply that I cannot even begin to share it in a little note...May Dr. Riordan's work continue far into the future...My deepest sympathy to his family and ro those who did get to know him personally...With sadness, Blondie Hill

As a reporter in Wichita many years ago, I could always count on Dr. Hugh for an informed perspective on a story. His conferences introduced me to some wonderful people and provided some of the most interesting interviews of my career. My prayers are with the Riordan family. Dr. Hugh's impact will be felt for many years. I still feel it today.

I have no thoughts or memories of Hugh himself, but to Jan a friend and mentor May God place his arms around you and comfort you in your time of grief. I would like to tell you that you have been an inspiration. again our thoughts and prayers are with you and the family. God Bless. Mechell

I first recall meeting Dr. Hugh Riordan at an Orthomolecular Conference in Vancouver in 2000. Dr. Abram Hoffer had introduced him as one of the foremost researchers in Vitamin C. I was fascinated to learn about his clinic, and soon thereafter we visited him in Wichita to see for ourselves The Bright Spot for Health, research, and education! At our meeting in Vancouver, we met with Dr. Riordan and other Orthomolecular pioneers to learn what our family could do to best further the development of Orthomolecular Psychiatry, and he suggested that we have a super Orthomolecular website. Thanks to his vision and the trustees of the Bio-Brain Center, www.orthomolecular.org was created! Of course there were countless projects Dr. Riordan led and participated in to further Orthomolecular medicine and to save and transform the lives of patients, not the least of which were his authorship of the Medical Mavericks book series (I was so grateful to learn of the Medical Mavericks III book being available) and his significant leadership in publishing the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine as well as serving on the International Schizophrenia Foundation Board. His Orthomolecular lectures were always enlightening for the newcomer as well as the veteran student of Orthomolecular Medicine. Our family had planned to fund an Orthomolecular pilot study with niacin and Vitamin C that Hugh had proposed with the University of Kansas, and it is distressing that Hugh did not live to see this project through. I am hopeful that with the help of the Center and UK, the project will proceed as Dr. Riordan envisioned it. As we worked on various Orthomolecular projects together, our family got to know Dr. Riordan, and although I had only met Neil and Theresa briefly, I felt like I knew Jan and his children. For we had wonderful conversations about each of them – their personalities, interests, accomplishments and passions. Dr. Riordan’s personality and communication style reminded me of my dad’s, and although he was a man of few words, I always got a lot out of his words. Whether it was words of encouragement when we had sponsored the Orthomolecular section of the Food As Medicine Conference in 2001, or words of wisdom when he encouraged us to move forward with Orthomolecular research studies yet spend our funds judiciously, or guidance on health matters that helped me and others get and stay well, or words of understanding and thoughtful advice about my family, Hugh Riordan was an amazing influence to my family and all of those who knew him. I am grateful to him for going far beyond the call of duty to help my brother with his health problems. And although he was not open to receiving help, I really appreciated Dr. Riordan's efforts. Also, I have reflected many hours on a few short statements he made to identify why my brother would not accept help. Although we still have not found the answer, Dr. Riordan gave me insightful ways of looking at things that hopefully will help us learn how to help others with mental health challenges in the future and also accept the things we cannot change. When Dr. Hoffer called me Friday afternoon to say that Hugh Riordan had died, I wanted to turn back the clock and find a way for him to have survived his stroke. I had received an e-mail from Dr. Riordan on Friday at 11:37 a.m. My dad, Charles, had spoken with Hugh on Monday about moving forward with the Orthomolecular research project. We had had to post phone a trip to the clinic in December, and Dr. Riordan several times encouraged us to reschedule later in December. I did my best to make that happen because something kept nagging at me to go ahead with the trip. I recalled his saying at the last two ISF Board Meetings that he did not have much time. And so when we could not meet immediately in person, at my parents’ urging, I did ask him to please send us a proposal so we could move forward with the research project. I remembered him counseling me to help others in preventing their having a stroke, and I so much wanted him to benefit from his advice. I recounted each of our conversations and communications the past year wondering how we could have helped this amazing man who helped so many. And in the end, of course, I had to accept that I could do nothing to change his passing. All we can do is let his family, friends, associates and his Bright Spot family know we care. I feel so honored and blessed to have gotten to know Hugh Riordan. I am a better person as a result of knowing and working with him, and so is the world better because of the phenomenal contributions of Dr. Hugh Riordan! As I continue to reflect on the many ways Dr. Riordan has been a teacher to me, my family, the Orthomolecular family, his community, and the world, I remain a student and an advocate, more determined than ever to get the word out and make Orthomolecular medicine a household word and Orthomolecular treatment the standard of care for patients around the world! With love, Julie for Charles, Lela and Julie Hilton

As a patient of The Center for the Improvement of Human Functioning, I am saddened by the loss of Dr. Hugh Riordan. There are thousands like me who have chronic illnesses that have come to a dead end with conventional medicine, only to find hope, education and wellness from Dr. Riordan and the staff of “The Center”. From the moment you enter the facility, Dr. Riordan’s presence could be felt. What makes Dr. Riordan so very special was the way that he took interest in every patient as an individual, working, teaching, coaching us back to health instead of a 5 minute visit and a prescription pad. I laugh when people tell me about the strange looking building and what they think goes on there. I tell you the truth; you can look long and hard only to find a very few medical facilities that work with and love their patients like Dr. Riordan and his Center for the Improvement of Human Functioning. Thank you Dr. Riordan for all you’ve taught us, you will be greatly missed.
Phil Ray
Hugh Riordan was a unique presence in the field of complementary and alternative medicine. I send my caring thoughts to the Riordan family and the staff of The Center. Hugh was like a force of nature--and we therefore may have taken him somewhat for granted and never thought he might some day be gone. Like Linus Pauling before him he will be irreplacable. He was a true Medical Maverick! May his example inspires us to strive for even greater heights.. --Ralph Moss

I am so sad to hear about Dr. Hugh's death. I first met Dr. Hugh in August of 2001. I came to the Center because Dr. Jeanne Drisko recommended the Center and Dr. Hugh as a possible help to me. I had been diagnosed with Stage IV ovarian cancer in June of 2001. I came to the center and met with Dr. Hugh and immediately bonded with his warm personality and humor. He gave me hope that I could survive and thrive inspite of my diagnosis. I followed his suggestion to use IV vitamin C along with the chemotherapy. It made such a difference!!! I was able to get into remission and remain in remission 3 1/2 years as of this December. I didn't get to see Dr. Hugh when I visited the Center on December 28th. I am so sorry that I didn't see him one more time to thank him (again) for all the hope and encouragement that he has given me over the last 3 1/2 years. I am not sure that I would be here today without the help of Dr. Hugh and the Center. Truly a great man that will be sorely missed.
Deborah Michalski
All I can write is what an outstanding life. Few of us will leave the kind of legacy Dr. Riordan left on life and health. My wife first met him shortly after learning she had ovarian cancer stage 4. She is doing well today and has not reoccured. That first meeing was 3 years ago!! May he rest in peace.

Dr. Riordan gave me the tools I needed to take care of myself. I was always looked forward to visiting him for my appointments. He always said something that made me laugh. Whenever I would see him he would always say "Hello neat person", which made me smile every time. I even invited him to my wedding, and how many doctors take the time to drive an hour to see one of their patients get married. He was a very special person to me and I will miss him very much.

We, here at the Leavenworth Public School District are very saddened at the news of the passing of Dr. Riordan. He was such a wonderful friend and supporter of our wellness program. His generosity for our program was manifested through his making a video of our project, which was key in the marketing of the program; providing funding in between grants and helping us to make connections with other Foundations who had similar interests. One of Dr. Riordan's many forte's was connecting individuals and groups with similar interests and or projects to each other. He played an integral role as a leader of the nutrition field to other professionals and lay people alike. He will be missed as a leader but also as a great human being. We join you in the celebration of a good life well lived. Carol Dark Ayres, Grant Writer, Foundation Coordinator, Leavenworth Public School District.

Mrs. Riordan, Children and Staff; Our sincere sympathy for your loss. We have considered it a pleasure and opportunity to have known Dr. Riordan the past several years as our Physician and friend. Not only has our health benefited, our lives enriched by this kind Renaissance Man. The contributions he made to society are countless and without wanting any special recognition. A gentle, great man who will be missed for years to come. May all the gifts of health, knowledge, memories, love for his family help sustain all of us in the coming days.

When I was a new La Leche League employee Dr.Hugh stopped in the Franklin Park, IL office gave a single rose to every woman employee at her desk. He thanked each one of us for the work we were doing to help breastfeeding mothers. I thought what a class act! Katy Lebbing, Manager, LLLI Center for Breastfeeding Information

Hugh was a leader, an innovative thinker, an explorer, and a friend. For four or five years during the nineties, about six of the past-presidents from the American Holistic Medical Association would get together for a long weekend at a retreat center north of San Francisco. It was at that time that I became familiar with Hugh's humor, his kindness, and his vast amount of knowledge. I will miss Hugh's larger-than-life presence, but I know that the work he has initiated will be carried on by capable hands and hearts. Good bye, Hugh. I love you. Bill Manahan in Minnesota

Victor Hugo wrote "An invasion of armies can be resisted but not an idea whose time has come". Orthomolecular Medicine's triumph is inevitable, but it still takes very intelligent and courageous people to carry its banner forward. Dr Hugh Riordan was certainly one such individual. He will be greatly missed, but we owe it to him to keep the banner flying.
Dr Harold D Foster
Hugh was one of the few physicians I've met who spoke of the whole person. Yes, he said, nutrients are important. Yes, he assured me, our physical "infrastructure" is important. Yes, he told me, we learn much by laboratory testing and consultation about our biology. And, Hugh said, the person's inner thinking is most vitally important. Those alone, he felt, would determine the outcome of any "medical" intervention. I can still see him standing close during our last conference together, smiling that great wonderful smile of warmth. I shall never forget him. My deepest condolences to his family. Blessings to all ... Merrily Manthey

"Choice, not chance determines destiny." From dr. Hugh Riordan’s motivating concepts. Looking over these concepts, they express all similar feelings. It outlines, where dr. Hugh stood in life. Also: “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave the trail”. I am sure, he left the trail, trying to discover a new field where he will be useful. In his epilogue “reflecting upon the past, contemplating the future” Hugh asks himself, reflecting to his professional life: "have we been useful?"
Hugh, you have been very useful! For your patients and for orthomolecular medicine in general.
PS. Hugh, also one of your favorites: "Never forget that only dead fish swim with the stream" (Malcolm Muggeridge).

I feel blessed to have met Dr. Riordan last summer as he and The Bright Spot so hospitably welcomed the Touch for Health Kinesiology Association's annual conference. To learn of his devoted work and see the wonderful fruits of his labor was truly gratifying. However, what will always remain a precious memory in my heart is the image of his gracious countenance, the far too rare respect he showered upon his patients (co-learners), and what seemed to be a remarkable blend of patience, perseverence, and a tireless sense of adventure and discovery. His brilliance, elegance, and gentle kindness has left a bold mark in history and tender place in our broken hearts.

I feel deeply sad and hurt for Dr's family and "The Center's" family who knew and loved him so dearly. I did not know him personally, but feel that we as patients of "The Center" and the world have lost a man who has given so much of his life to educating and to helping others. He was always a quiet, dignified man that I would see there with a warm smile and a kind greeting as I would pass by. I felt that he was very proud of what he had built there and a hard working man who wanted the best for the tired, ill and hurting folks like myself. I valued his ethics and respected each visit at "The Center" knowing that I could not receive any treatment any place on earth that was equal to the treatment I receive there. I like to think of "The Center" as HELP and HOPE. When I came I needed HELP and they gave me that and lots of HOPE and gently informed me that we are known as a team, the Dr and I, as CO-LEARNERS. Never have I ever left without those two elements. I gain great strength from just walking through the doors and feeling the love and warmth there that you do not receive anyplace else that I HAVE FOUND. I am thankful to the staff who is always kind and gentle. I am so very thankful for Dr. Ron and his never changing thoughtfulness, respect, gentle spirit and always dedicated to having me leave with the HELP and HOPE that I came in hopes of. Just the looks of the beautiful grounds inspires me and gives me peace. God has to be working and blessing this wonderful place that I love to spread the word about. I will never give up the HELP and HOPE that I receive from this wonderful place. I know that this tremendous vision of Dr Hugh Riordan, that became reality due to his brilliant and curious drive and desire to make the world a better place and to help humanity, will continue to be what it is today and always striving for a better way. That will be, in my opinion; due to the love of the staff and the collected desire to help humanity and leave the world a better place.
I thank Dr. Riordan for all that he did for me in knowing there was a better way and the fortitude to help the sick and hurting. I thank the staff and nurses for the kindness they have shown me and the friends I have made for life. And I thank Dr. Ron Hunninghake for always showing me the repect and attention that I needed. He always has time and always is polite. May the Lord continue to work in this wonderful place and I feel very blessed to be part of it and see the Lord's presence there. This will always be one of my greatest blessings and my prayers are coming to Dr Riordan's family and the hurt that they feel today and to Dr's co-workers and staff. And to Dr. Ron I know you have a job ahead of you and your co-learner will be praying for you. Thank You to all of you, With love and sincerity, Nancy Jane Norris, co-learner since 1990

I first met Dr. Hugh at a planning meeting for the One of a Kind Show. I didn't know anything about Dr. Hugh or the Center. There he was, bubbling with ideas and creativity, talking about a show that could inject new life into children's television programming. It became the "One of a Kind" show for which I wrote the theme song. It won several national awards and there's been nothing like it since. It was an exciting time and I became very involved with the many aspects of the Center, even working there in the early '80s. I'll miss his creativity, energy and sense of humor, his determination and humanity. I hope that I can honor him in my life and I know that he will always have a place in my heart and thoughts.

I will remember Dr. Hugh for the positive impact he had on so many lives and making his life work - the work for a better life, a brighter future and love. Dr. Hugh gave me opportunities and the inspiration to learn, grow and thrive. My thoughts and prayers go to his family and friends.

JUST BEING IN HIS PRESENCE MADE YOU WANT TO BE ALL YOU CAN BE
I learned to speak in public without fear because of him. He told me how he once got over his fear while speaking in public. He would fine one person in the audience(back of room)to concentrate on, then he would imagine them sitting on the toilet. We all thought it was funny, but it works. I learned who I am, mind body and soul. All that I learned while at the Center I pass on to others, here in Florida. Dr. Riordan made Holistic Medicine invaluable and necessary long before people realized its value to their health. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to know you. I will always! always! remember you and love you. Thanks Dr. Hugh Riordan and The Center For The Improvement of Human Functioning International for the Memories GOD BLESS

I am a former patient of Dr.Riordan. I had been to so many doctors in the past with chonic illness. When I went to The Center I was a little hesitant at first, but once I spoke with Dr. Riordan I felt like finally someone cared. He was a very serious man, but quite of a jokester.I see alot of people with the bumper sticker from The Center and it makes me put a smile on my face, knowing that they got treated special just like i did. Thank you Dr. Riordan, you will be missed. Sheila Pottorff

I knew Hugh for many years but usually saw him only once a year at the Nutritional Medicine Today meetings in Canada. He was one of the brightest beacons in the firmament of orthomolecular medicine. It was always wonderful to see him. Hugh was a very genuine, compassionate man whose sensitivity, intellect, knowldege, and humor shone through. I know that Linus Pauling held him in high regard and would have been immensely pleased that Hugh was the driving force behind the use of intravenous vitamin C in cancer. I share the grief at losing him with all his friends, colleagues, patients, and family.

When I first came to the center in 1995 my health was at an all time low. My memory was getting so bad I could hardly remember things from one minute to the other. When I saw Dr Hugh he was very knowledgable and he gave me the hope I was looking for. He spent plenty of time reassuring me that help was on the way! I did get the help I was seeking and each time I came back to the center, I always thought back to the first time and how Dr Hugh was such a GENTLE MAN! His character and help to humanity will be a legacy all of us will be proud of. He will truly be missed be me and the many other whoes lives he touched. Thanks so much for a true maverick hero!

The news of Dr. Hugh's death was shocking and left me with a deep sense of loss. I met him through our mutual work in the community shortly after I arrived in Wichita in the summer of 1984. I quickly went to him for help in raising the level of my health. I owe Dr. Hugh a tremendous debt of gratitude as a friend, physician and mentor. He was a dedicated supporter of KSOF, the fine arts radio station at Friends University, where I served as music director and morning personality from 1984 until the station was sold in 1991. Hugh liked the sound of my voice and delighted in getting me to do radio programs for the center or voicings for his early efforts on Medical Mavericks. He was a warm supportive presence in my life. It was not unusual to receive a card or note of thanks or encouragement from him and these will now be fond remembrances of good friend. Dr. Hugh became a different kind of mentor to me as I earned the master's degree in marriage and family therapy at Friends University in 1991 and launched into a career as a therapist. I turned to him many times for ideas about how to handle cases. He offered advise for helping a ten year old anorexic girl I treated. This girl began eating and successfully overcame a difficult eating disorder. My journey took me back to Omaha and I have had fewer occasions to talk with Dr. Hugh in recent years, even though he has remained frequently in my thoughts. He has been a central figure in my life personally and as an example of a healer that I will always be influenced by. His work and spirit will live on in the wonderful center he founded and through the work of the gifted and visionary healers there. Thanks for everything, Dr. Hugh. I'll continue to do my best to pass everything you have given me on to others.
With many fond memories and confidence in the future of The Center for the Improvement of Human Functioning International,

What a life well-lived! Dr. Riordan was an inspiration to all who walked through the doors of The Center. His devotion to the well-being of others, his caring, loving attitude and his enthusiasm for his work were evident in everything he said and did. We are all saddened by his passing, but we can certainly find comfort in the testimonies of his many patients whose lives have been dramatically changed for the better because of his vision and hard work. I thank God for offering his healing touch through his humble servant, Dr. Riordan.

I just learned tonight of the great loss this world has endured. The ending of a life so great to the creation of the pathways that were his passion, is utterly unthinkable. But I think that he has, in his presence amoung us, created a better world, better people, and inspired the thought processes of all who knew him, to encompass the fact that all things are possible. He has truly left a personal legacy. Yet his life is only the trunk of the tree, sprouting branches; and trees live forever and grow. We have much to look forward to, all because of Dr. Hugh.

Dr. Hugh was an amazing man: brilliant, kind, humble, and continually excited by life, and made an enormous contribution to integrative medical research, education, and treatment. On a more personal note, he always greeted people with a big smile and a hug -- he just beamed, and brought good cheer wherever he went. What an amzing role model he was to us all!

We first had the opportunity to meet Dr. Riordan on Oct. 17, 2000. It was my first visit to the Center and I was there to seek advice as the result of treatment for back pain with motrin. I had lost 15 lbs. and was down to 129 lbs. My digestive system was "torn up" as a result of the treatment with motrin. My medical doctors could not locate my problem so I decided to seek alternative treatment. I was really impressed with the thoroughness of his questioning during that first visit. Needless to say, his recommendations worked and both of us still visit the Center every 6 months. We are very thankful for Dr. Riordan and the Garvey Center.

My wife, Nancy, and I are Center Health Hunters and frequent visitors to the Center for Lectures and for purchases at the store. We have learned and benefited from the lectures. We attended Dr. Riordan's Memorial service yesterday. We first met Dr. Riordan and Jan in the late 1970's at an East High parent event. Our youngest son, Jim, was a classmate and good friend of the twins, Brian and Quinn. They have continued their friendship over the years. We have become admirers of Dr. Riordan's excellent orthomolecular work and are thankful for his treatment of our daughter, Ellen. She had been incorrectly diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and was suffering with swollen joints and having difficulty walking. She was very ill and had been advised to begin taking medicine to treat rheumatoid arthritis. We contacted Dr. Riordan. He performed his trademark, careful and thorough diagnosis, for which he had become famous. The result was miraculous. Ellen's health was restored and she has since given birth to three more children. We are eternally grateful. Thank you Dr. Riordan and may God Bless you forever. Chuck and Nancy McBride.

I have worked at The Center will be 5 years in May. It makes me laugh now how I think back and remeber how scared I was of Dr. Riordan and that he was always going to fire me. I think it was because, according to one of my co-workers, I was the first person who had made him slap his hand to his forhead 3 times in 10 minutes. He then deducted it was due to lack of sleep from my back to back pregnancies that made me so flighty.
He really made an impression on my young son, Samuel, who will be 4 on March 13th. Samuel has visited The Center a few times and was a co-learner himself with Dr. Krier on Dec. 6th, 2004. He liked to refer to Dr. Riordan and Dr. Riordo and would not say otherwise. In fact on his first visit, Samuel ran up the stairs and up to Dr. Riordan's office. I was right after him as Sam ran into Dr. Riordan's office and started touching things. I was very imbarrassed but Dr. Riordan, who was sitting on his couch, just laughed and said "Hello, come join the party".

My husband Phil and I and my cousins Naomin and Frank Jacobson are so sad to learn of Hugh's passing. He was a man of quality, a commanding presence, and truly a "brightspot" for the many that have been guided by him over the years. He has made so many contributions to health promotion and Orthomolecular disease treatment. We will sorely miss him.

He was my great mentor and my friend. As a neuroscientist working in Orthomolecular research Dr. Riordan and I shared many interests. He was extremely supportive of my work from the moment I spoke at ISOM the first time and encoraged me greatly in my scientific pursuits. He came to visit us in Colorado last year, a visit we shall always cherish. I shall miss him greatly. Phyllis J. Bronson, Ph.D.

At our clinic in West Virginia most of our IVC patients and esp. our cancer patients have heard of Dr. Hugh from my shared info which I've given from his lectures and the abstracts from his publications. Although I've never met Dr. Hugh personally, he has impacted my patients and me through our belief in his work and our experience with his treatment guidelines. He has made quite an impact from where I stand. Keep up the great work.

A friend in Wichita called me to tell me of Dr. Hughs passing. I had just received a personal letter from him following a visit my sister, dughter and I made in December. My memory of him is very vivid. Dr. Hugh is one of the most personal and decicated physicians I have had the pleasure of knowing. His dedication to prevention is well documented and visible in the Center itself; however, his tender and compassionate manner is what drew me back for our recent visit. I just wanted to see him again and thank him for helping my daugher regain her strength after her malaria in 1995. Even after this visit he followed up with a personal letter and comments to me. His memorial is the Center and all those who work within it. His life was an inspiration and a blessing. Thank you again and again and again!

Among practitioners, Dr. Hugh Riordan was a GIANT of a person AND scientist, whose attention was always directed away from himself. My wife (Betty) and I recall fondly our last interaction with him, which was at the Mind/Body meeting in Panama City. He and Dr. Abram Hoffer were being honored for their contribution to the field of OrthoMolecular Psychiatry. While neither of them realized it at the time, it was through applying their treachings that I was able to restore my own health back in the 1970's. For this, I shall forever be thankful. Dr. Hugh, your legacy will live always in our hearts.

I have handled the Insurance for not only the Center, but Dr. Riordan personally, and have always enjoyed his uniquie humor, smile, and positive outlook on everything. I was truly devastated and saddened by his passing but he is leaving a legacy with the Center that is very much a "bright spot for health". He has given hope to so many individuals who, in many cases, had lost all hope of a healthy life. Thank you Dr. Riordan for a job well done.

Though I never had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Hugh in person, I well recall how graciously he gave of his time throughout the creation of Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide, for which I served as co-editor. His willingness to lend his insights and assistance was always accompanied by his vast knowledge, good humor, and constant encouragement and support for the work we were doing. Without his input, the Guide would be far less than it is. And without Dr. Hugh's devotion to the principles of healing, countless of us would lack the understanding of holistic health that has so enriched our lives. Dr. Hugh was a giant in the field of healing, and The Center he founded remains the model for the health clinics of the future. Through it, his legacy will live on forever, bringing hope and healing to many, many others. I've no doubt that Dr. Hugh is now carrying on his work "beyond this mortal coil," just as I know the blessings he left all of us who interacted with him remain with us. Dr Hugh had a magnificent talent for leadership and empowerment that reflects only a fraction of his true brilliance. He inspired us to do better and to do more for others and ourselves. He helped us reach higher levels of achievement than we ever though we were capable of reaching. We are going to miss his extraordinary ability to think differently and pioneer revolutionary approaches to health and wellbeing.

Hugh and I interacted over the last three decades in many ways, but the one that was most unique in my experience was an impromptu exchange that took place sometime in the Seventies. He and I appeared on the same program and he began by saying that the shape of his head was NOT the result of a difficult child birth. He went on to relate aspects of his ethnic make up related to the shape of his head and, from that, on into his fascinating presentation. He had the audience roaring with laughter and charmed with his outstanding teaching. He was a difficult act to follow. So I began by reminding the audience of Hugh's statement about the shape of his head and explained that the shape of my head was, indeed, the result of a difficult child birth (which happens to be true and it drives phrenologists crazy)and proceeded with my presentation. Afterwards, Hugh had to examine my head more closely, of course, and then roared with laughter at the imprompt transition statement, and suggested that we really ought to take advantage of those two statements about the shape of our heads, and deliberately buid them into a joint presentation sometime. We speculated about it many times over the years, but we never got around to doing it. Yet it was a private joke that enlivend dozens of our exchanges. Dr. Hugh never forgot a good line. Physically we have lost one of our most creative, original, and productive thinkers in spiritual healing and energy medicine. May his mind and spirit go on to further body-mind-spirit insights and find a way to continue to share them with us at levels other than the physical!

Dr. Riordan was always "There for us". I've never known someone of such genius, creativity and integrity. You knew he would always tell you the truth as he saw it. Yet he acknowledged that it was the way He saw it. My family went to Dr. Riordan for 24 years. It felt like he was family. He was an anchor of common sense, integrity and truth for us. If we all can just stand up for what we believe like he did, it will be a better world.

My heart was saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Riordan. He was a visionary ahead of his time, but never gave up the fight to bring enlightenment to those in health care and patients seeking assistance with their illnesses. This community will truly miss him and his enthusiasm for alternative health care.

We have been using IVC at the Metalife Medical Centre for two years with the constant guidance of Dr. Riordan. I am personally thanking Dr. Riordan on behalf of the many patients we have using IVC who would not be alive today if not for the work of Dr.Riordan. His impact on our medical group and patients is significant. He will be missed. Kent MacLeod B.Sc.Phm

I'll never forget the statement he made to me when I had my first appt. with him. He said, "Bliss, you are beautiful and bright-you should have the world by the horses' ass!" :) I've never forgotten it-at a time when other psychiatrists didn't believe there was hope for my depression, he did. I will always be grateful to him for that and for giving me hope! My sincere condolences to his family and to the Brightspot staff. God bless you all!

I am devastated at the news of Dr Hugh Riordan's demise but he is a true orthomolecular giant, the most important is his intravenous vitamin c protocol which I have used as my reference in treating patients.I believe without this protocol, complimentary practitioners worldwide are at a lost in providing the best treatment modalities for their patients.Dr Riordan further improved the intravenous protocol and made it available for health care practitioners and is another giant just like the late Dr F. Klenner. I salute you Dr Riordan and God Bless You! Dr Selva Kumar M.D.

I had the privilege of visiting the Center in August, 2003 for post-graduate physician training, where I met Dr. Riordan for the first time. He is one of the truly great physicians of our time - committed to healing the sick and not afraid to take risks for what he believes. His passing is a tremendous loss to our profession and he will be greatly missed.

I first remember Dr. Riordan as an intern (I was a student nurse)then as part of the Poling, Fender, Riordan psychiatric team. What a visionary man -- light years ahead of his time. As a parish nurse I, too, promote wholistic health as the only way that we can truly be healthy. What a gift Dr. Hugh Riordan has been to each of us. What a blessing to have known him.

Dr. Riordan stands very tall in our thoughts and memories. We will miss him.
Even though we could contribute little to The Center and wasn't around there alot, he always remembered us when he would see us -- speaking and calling us by name.
My first visit to The Center was in the spring of 1987. The first thing I said to Dr. Riordan is that I needed to know if I was mentally ill, in need of vitamin supplements, lazy, or needed to exercise. He responded by saying, "It's a little hard to exercise when your butt's a draggin'." I cried the first understanding I had had of how I felt and that there might be a problem. With treatment he gave me back my life. Barbara Decker

I have been a patient at Garvey Center for approximately 6-7 years now. I feel I owe my life to Dr. Riordan and Dr. Hunninghake, as no one else seemed to know what was wrong or how to help me until I found Garvey Center. Having suffered from allergies all of my adult life, I had taken allergy shots and medication for many years, fighting sore throats, sinus infections and congestion every fall and winter. As a result, I had been through many rounds of antibiotics which triggered yeast infections and, unknown to me, had finally developed into "intestinal" yeast or Leaky Gut Syndrome, causing severe food allergies, Fibromyalgia and a compromised immune system.
It was fall when I called Garvey Center for my first appointment. I had already lost down to 100 pounds, my throat was almost swelling shut every time I ate, and I was facing my usual fall and winter time colds. I knew I didn't dare take any more antibiotics and was beginning to think I might die.
Luckily, I found Garvey Center through a friend and my life began to make a miraculous turn around. I have Dr. Riordan, Dr. Hunninghake and the marvelous staff at Garvey Center to thank for that. The Center continues to be my "security blanket" today. I will be forever grateful for their expertise on a holistic approach to better health! Vickie Fisher, Pratt, KS

I never knew Dr.Hugh Riordan personally, but I have read his very important Maverick books and some articles, heard him lecture and seen him in the video "Masks of Madness;Science of Healing". I have been looking very carefully at the Bright Spot Home Page and have thought of what a wonderful institution this must be. I hope I can visit it some day!
I now wish to honor the memory of Dr.Hugh by telling, that Orthomolecular Medicine and Psychiatry is progressing even as far away as in Northern Europe - in Finland.
Karin Munsterhjelm-Ahumada, M.D.
Hugh Riordan correctly identified my problem as chemical sensitivity in 1974. Until that point, I had gone from doctor to psychiatrist and from psychiatrist to doctor. They offered me disbelief or drugs. Hugh was way ahead of his time - brilliant and courageous. I wish I had written a letter thanking him while he was still alive. I am so sorry that he is gone.

What do you write of man that mere words can never express. Everytime I think of his passing my eyes well-up with tears. I thank God for the great privilege of knowing Dr. Riordan-whose life was so much about giving to the lives of others. He was such a good listener, so sensitive, such a kind and gentle spirit and always observing.
Oh how I will miss sharing with him.I shall treasure all that he has bestowed upon my life and remember how he encouraged me. "To have touched one life is to have succeeded", but he touched so many.
Oh how I shall miss him. A man full of compassion, knowledge and wisdom. Words will never explain him--"awe-inspiring" maybe. Only God knows the depth of this "Good Doctor". How providential that his life should end while writing what he loved and lived. For Dr Riordan too,was a true "Medical Maverick". (Vol. IV) My Heartfelt Condolences, Patient and Admirer Peg Walker

Please accept my sincere regrets on Dr. Hugh Riordan's too early death on behalf of all those who came to know him in Norway. He came to Oslo at the end of March, 2000, to lecture on the use of vitamin C in cancer care for the Norwegian Cancer Society's first conference on alternative and complementary cancer care. At the same time, we used the opportunity to have him share his great insights into orthomolecular and environmental medicine at a conference organized by the Norwegian Association for Holistic Medicine. While here, we tied friendship bonds which I hoped would last for many years, and we talked of writing part of the third Medical Maveric book together. As time did not allow me to contribute, he completed the book by himself. Hugh was not only a very knowledgable person, but also a gentle and kind man whom we will never forget.

In 1978 an article appeared in the Wichita Eagle seeking Healthy Volunteers for Reasearch. I answered the call & still remember that first meeting with Dr. Riordan in a dingy office but also remember the enthusiasm & excitement of this special person. Over the years he has been there for me & helped save my life and my sanity. A Great Teacher & Listener. I know the work of The Center will go on. His legacy will continue. Comfort & Blessings to all who feel the loss of this great leader.

We have met only once, as far as I know, years ago, but he was such an impressive man with very personal ideas that I never forgot him. He was one of those Mavericks who tried to give healthcare a more human face, humanity and care were important foundations supporting his thinking. In that sense he was one of the few unique persons in this unhealthy world and even that may be called a tragedy.

It was back in the 1970s, before the Center was founded, that someone recommended Dr. Riordan to me for a certain health problem. I spent an hour with him at a clinic in Concordia, Kansas that he was visiting regularly at that time. It was my introduction to alternative medicine, and I came away with pages of notes on fascinating, original health concepts I'd never encountered before. I still have those notes and referred to them with nostalgia recently.
A little later, Dr. Riordan had my wife in a Wichita hospital getting Vitamin C intravenouslly for her crippling back difficulty. Imagine the trouble we had explaining to friends and relatives why a psychiatrist was treating her for back trouble! But other practitioners have opined that the treatments significantly reduced the level of back difficulty she has had over the years.
We continued to consult with Dr. Riordan periodically, even after we moved from Kansas. We had a brief conversation with him at the Center in October of 2004, not realizing it would be the last time we would see him. The loss was a shock. He was a blessing, both for improved health and as a friend. Robert B. Taylor, Las Cruces, NM

I am a living monument to Dr. Riordan. I was referred to him in January of 1986 by college classmate and friend Dr. David Clark of Salina after talking to his associate, Dr. Ron Hunninghake. Dr Ron has been my consulting physician at the Center since 1995.
I had been diagnosed with a severe case of ulcerative colitis in October of 1974 and with the help of some alternative health methods had avoided having a colostomy. My regular physician had prescribed a prednisone therapy for me in the spring of 1985, the side effects of which brought me very, very near death in late August. A friend with ulcers had been helped by my friend, Dr Clark, so I went to see him and that brought me to Dr. Riordan. He was taking hopeless cases and mine fit the bill.
Just to walk into the Center and see the staff and surroundings gives one a sense of improvemnent. Dr. Riordan always asked, "what's your body telling you" and that started the dialog. He listened well. He helped me analyze the messages I felt coming from my body then helped me understand what they meant and then gave suggestions as to how to address what was wrong. His thorough evaluation and recommendations were backed up with extensive lab tests and knowledge of work by other researchers. He helped me understand that he could not heal me and that drugs couldn't fix things. Good health comes from doing the right things for your body and from good nutrition. The hard part is knowing what your body needs since every body is different. I am alive today because I was able to hear some of what he knew and I am thankful for that priviledge.
THANK YOU DR HUGH RIORDAN!

Being nonprofit, as well as accepting Medicare for the elderly and disabled, is one of many reasons I hold Dr. Hugh Riordan’s clinic in extremely high regard. Finding such an experienced, thorough alternative clinic that is affordable is impossible. I would like to emphasize what a gift this is for those of us in dire straits. Only an extraordinary spirit could have created such a rare and lovely place.
If I could depart this world with even a tiny fraction of the honor, integrity, or fruits of labor radiated by this uncommon man, I would be so very proud. To his family, friends, and associates, how fortunate you have been and always will be as this noble angel smiles upon you. Many blessings –

We first met Dr. Riordan in 1981 when our 3 youngest children were ill. We'd made the rounds of family doctors, peditricians, and specialists without receiving any help. When I asked one of the peditricians why my children kept getting sick he actually said, "Medicine is not about preventing disease. It's about treating disease after it happens."
Dr. Riordan was the first doctor who actually listened to us when we talked about how ill the children were. He found both severe food allergies and lead in all three children. It made such a world of difference in all of our lives.
Even more important than the initial diagnosis and changes in the children's health; was the attitude that we were responsible for our health and we were capable of researching and understanding our health needs.
Dr. Riordan took medicine or medical care out of a secret black box and shared it with everyone.

Dear Friends of Dr. Hugh,
Serendipity or synchronisity brought me, as a researcher, thousands of miles as a co-learner to Dr. Riordan. I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Hugh and discussing my situation. An intuitive of sorts, seemingly unflapable and very personable. I regret Dr. Hugh's passing as he was a repository of information and thinking out of the box as the maverick he probably was.
Dr. Hugh, I celebrate your life and truely hope the direction and findings of your wonderful organization continue to provide human improvement. I toast you for all things great and wonderful from your untiring work, may you remain an inspiration to all whose paths you crossed. Please keep all forms of communications open dear Doctor. Personally, you are an inspiration to me to live . . .against the odds.
